These traditional mythical beasts are depicted in a seated, playful posture with their mouths wide open in a cheerful roar, each featuring a dark, textured mane and curled tails with intricate flame-like motifs.

The bodies of the lions are richly decorated with incised swirling patterns and stylized clouds or flames. The most unique feature of this pair is that they are hollowed out—the back of each lion opens up like a bowl, and the top of the head features a circular opening. This suggests they were designed as dual-purpose pieces, functioning as either incense burners (allowing smoke to drift out of the mouth or head) or as decorative holders for potpourri.

The bronze features a bright, glowing gold-tone finish with a lovely patina and darkening in the recesses of the carving, giving them a warm, antique appearance. This pair would make a stunning addition to an altar setting, a desk, or a curated console table.
