Built from native wood likely Sugi / Cedar) with a warm-toned stain, the chest displays a visible natural grain enhanced by decades of age and a deep, glossy patina.

The storage configuration features three full-width upper drawers and a lower tier containing a wide drawer paired with small side drawers originally used for private valuables. The drawer fronts are adorned with classical dark iron bail handles (kura-tsubo style) and ornate iron faceplates, all bound together by protective iron corner brackets (sumi-kanagu) and heavy side-carrying handles (warabi-te) that accentuate its utilitarian roots.

The original small hinged safe door (koban-do) covering the bottom-right compartment is no longer present, revealing the inner drawer arrangement and adding to the chest's authentic, storied antique aesthetic. Solidly constructed and structurally sound, this versatile Japanese piece makes a compelling statement as a dresser, console, or accent storage cabinet in both modern and classic interiors. See less
