The central scene depicts a seated dignitary surrounded by attendants and court figures, arranged within an architectural and garden setting. Pine trees, bamboo, flowering branches, rocks and distant mountains rise above the gathering, creating a densely layered composition with considerable depth.

The figural scene is framed by pierced floral and foliate carving over geometric latticework. A broad reddish-brown lacquered molding separates the carved interior from the outer border, which is decorated with gilt geometric patterns and smaller narrative vignettes against a dark ground. Touches of red and black enliven the predominantly gold surface and articulate the figures’ robes, hair and facial features.

The openwork construction allows the wall color to remain visible behind the carving, emphasizing its sculptural character. Two metal hanging fittings are attached along the upper edge. A richly detailed architectural fragment capable of serving as a substantial decorative focal point. See less
