The rectangular top is constructed with a framed inset panel and gently rounded outer edge, displaying the expressive grain of the elm throughout.

Below, the table is supported by four straight rounded legs joined by horizontal stretchers. The apron is particularly appealing, centered by an open framework of carved scrolling spandrels terminating in curled, ruyi-like motifs. Additional shaped brackets appear beneath the corners, giving the otherwise restrained silhouette a subtle decorative rhythm. Traditional mortise-and-tenon construction is visible throughout, along with old joinery and small inset repairs accumulated during its working life.

The narrow proportions make this antique Chinese table particularly useful as a console, hall table or substantial side table. Its restrained ornament, handsome surface and architectural construction allow it to work equally well in traditional and more contemporary interiors. See less
