Antique Meriden Silver Plate Co. Honeycomb Floral Tea & Coffee Service – Pattern 1424, Circa 1880s–1890s, Set of 5
A complete five-piece quadruple silver-plated tea and coffee service by the Meriden Silver Plate Co., pattern number 1424. This attractive set features the company’s distinctive honeycomb-textured ground combined with finely engraved floral sprays of large blossoms and foliage. Lidded pieces display the characteristic dark oxidized or blackened bands around the shoulders, creating a pleasing two-tone contrast with the bright silver plating. The set includes:
Large teapot with hinged honeycomb lid and finial
Smaller covered pot (coffee or hot-water pot)
Creamer
Two-handled sugar bowl (one open, one covered version visible in photos)
Waste bowl
All pieces are marked on the underside with the Meriden Silver Plate Co. lion trademark, “QUADRUPLE PLATE,” and pattern number 1424. The service exemplifies late-19th-century American silver-plate hollowware produced for the middle-class market during the height of the Aesthetic Movement
. Age & Style: Late Victorian / Aesthetic Movement, circa 1880–1895. The honeycomb patterning and naturalistic floral engraving are characteristic of Meriden’s 1420-series patterns of this period.
Condition: Good antique condition overall. The quadruple plating remains largely intact, especially on the raised floral work and polished rims and collars. Expected age-related surface wear, light scratches, and tarnish are present. The dark bands on the lidded pieces appear to be original contrasting finish with some additional oxidation. No major dents or structural damage are apparent. Handles and finials are secure. Suitable for display or gentle use after light polishing.
Dimensions Approximate:
