Lia Jeune Princesse, a pencil-signed, numbered color lithograph by Spanish painter Agustín Úbeda (1925–2007), whose dreamlike work came out of the School of Paris and the School of Madrid. A woman in a lace shawl and red slippers floats beside red horses and a rider over a town with a soaring orange spire, all on a glowing ochre-gold ground beneath a blue sky. It is signed "A. Ubeda" and numbered 240/260 in pencil, lower left. It comes in a slim blue metal frame with glazing from the New York framer Kulicke (label on the back), wired and ready to hang.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Agustín Úbeda (1925–2007) was born in Herencia, in Spain's La Mancha region. He trained at Madrid's San Fernando School of Fine Arts under Daniel Vázquez Díaz. A French Institute scholarship took him to Paris in 1953, where he lived for about twenty years and showed regularly at Galerie Drouant-David (Bernard Buffet's gallery), winning its Jeune Peinture prize in 1957. His dreamlike blend of figurative expressionism and surrealism places him in both the School of Paris and the School of Madrid. He later became a professor of painting at Madrid's Complutense University, and his work is in about seventy museums, including Madrid's Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Lowe Art Museum in Miami.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
"Lia Jeune Princesse" shows the floating figures, horses and village rooftops that recur through Úbeda's poetic, mysterious personal symbolism.
