An 18th century Country French Louis XVI buffet, hand carved in solid oak and stripped to reveal the pale, sun washed beauty of the old wood. The natural grain glows with a soft silvery patina that only two centuries can give, bringing warmth and texture to every surface.
Two deeply molded doors frame raised panels with stepped crossette corners, an architectural detail that gives the façade its quiet dignity. Between them, a carved pilaster displays a flowering vine rising from a cluster of acanthus leaves, a timeless emblem of abundance and renewal. Below, the paneled apron centers on a carved oval medallion, the signature neoclassical motif that defines the French Louis XVI style. Tall steel fiche hinges with turned finials and pierced scrolling escutcheons add an elegant note, while the original hand forged locks remain on the doors. Constructed with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the case opens to shelved interiors and stands on sturdy block feet that continue the stiles.
French Louis XVI design brought neoclassical restraint to furniture making in the late 18th century, favoring balanced proportion, straight lines, and refined classical ornament. Provincial menuisiers embraced these ideals in local oak, translating the elegance of Paris into furniture with grace and solid presence.
Lovely in a dining room as a serving buffet, in an entry beneath a gilt mirror, or in a living room flanked by a pair of lamps, the pale stripped finish works beautifully with today's light, natural interiors and blends equally well with collected European pieces.
