Garstin Cox's (1892-1933) 'Autumn Woodland Path' draws the eye along a sunlit trail that winds between tall beech trunks toward a pale opening of sky, where the faint outline of cottages rests on the horizon. Working in gouache, Cox layers matte, opaque color with remarkable control, catching light on fallen leaves, dry grasses and the last amber foliage of the season. Two great trees frame the view like a doorway, giving the composition its depth and an open invitation to follow the path into the distance. The mood belongs to late afternoon, the hour when cool shadow and warm light meet in the woods.
Garstin Cox devoted his career to the landscape of Cornwall, painting its woodlands, valleys and Atlantic coast in all their changing moods with a nostalgic, romantic sensibility. Born in Camborne to a father who also painted, he trained at the Camborne School of Art and in St Ives, the coastal town that drew British painters seeking natural light and open air subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy at just 19, and later at the Guildhall in London and the Royal West of England Academy, where he was elected an associate member. From his Atlantic Studio on the Lizard peninsula he painted the scenes for which he is best remembered, including the Roseworthy Valley and Kynance Cove, and his work is held today in the National Trust collection at Lanhydrock.
Presented in a deeply molded wood frame with a linen liner and gilded inner slip, the painting brings warmth and a sense of open space to a library, study, entry or living room, and pairs beautifully with both traditional and transitional interiors.
