Lucien Hock's (1899-1972) "Fagne du Nesselon" carries the viewer deep into the high moorland of the Hautes Fagnes, the wild upland plateau of eastern Belgium where peat bog, heather and dark stands of spruce stretch toward the German border. Hock paints the land with a confident, loaded brush, building the slopes in broad planes of russet, umber and moss so the hillsides feel solid and weathered, shaped by centuries of wind and rain.
The composition is built on depth. The eye follows a narrow stream as it winds out of the shadowed ravine in the foreground, passes between tall conifers standing guard on either side, and opens onto a golden plain and the blue line of distant hills. Above, sweeping strokes of slate and white set clouds moving across the plateau, capturing the changeable sky for which the region is known. The autumn palette of the heath gives the scene warmth and gravity, and its generous scale gives it true presence on the wall.
Born in Liège in 1899, Lucien Hock studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège from 1917 to 1919 under Adrien de Witte, one of the most respected masters of the Liège school. He devoted his career to the landscapes of his native Wallonia, along with refined floral still lifes, and his work belongs to the proud tradition of Liège painters who found lifelong inspiration in the valleys of the Ardennes and the moors of the Hautes Fagnes. Painted in 1960, late in his career, "Fagne du Nesselon" reveals a mature artist working with freedom and economy, distilling a beloved landscape into bold, expressive form.
Signed lower right, the work is also titled, signed and dated in the artist's hand on the reverse. It survives in its original wide silvered frame with a linen liner. It will bring a sense of open space and natural beauty to a library, study or living room, and pairs beautifully with leather, warm woods and a collected mix of antique and contemporary furnishings.
