Signed at the lower right and inscribed “Paris, 1883,” the painting bears a signature that appears to read Théo François.
A generous cluster of dark grapes, still attached to its twisting vine and leaves, spills across a shallow dish at the center of the composition. Beside it rests a golden melon, its deeply ribbed form and textured skin carefully observed. Smaller fruits, touched with shades of red and gold, complete the arrangement, their colors lending warmth and life to the scene.
The artist’s treatment of light draws the eye across the bloom of the grapes, the curling edges of the vine leaves and the folds of the pale tablecloth. Set against a deep background, the fruit seems freshly gathered and arranged for the painter’s pleasure. The composition reflects the long European tradition of still life painting, in which the beauty of the harvest and the pleasures of the table became subjects worthy of an artist’s careful study.
Presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling foliate ornament and an aged patina, the antique painting has the warmth and character of a work treasured for generations.
