An impressive antique Japanese cloisonne enamel vase from the Meiji period, circa 1900, decorated with flowering narcissus against a rich translucent red ground. Measuring 26 inches tall, the vase has a rounded pear shaped body rising into an exceptionally long, slender neck with a gently flared mouth.
The translucent red enamel is a particularly striking feature, extending from the rounded body through the soaring neck. Its glasslike surface allows the fine texture beneath to remain visible, creating depth and subtle variations from glowing ruby to deeper crimson as the light changes. Along the largely undecorated neck, the uninterrupted color emphasizes the vase’s graceful proportions and the luminous quality of the enamel.
White narcissus blossoms with yellow centers emerge among overlapping leaves in shades of emerald green, turquoise, and pale celadon. Fine wire outlines define the petals, buds, stems, and foliage, creating a flowing floral composition around the body. The vivid red ground provides a beautiful contrast to the delicate white flowers and cool tones of the foliage. Toward the foot, the decoration transitions into a soft, pale green ground.
Dating to the turn of the 20th century, the vase is mounted on a shaped bronze base with a warm patina, a contrasting gilt toned circular collar, and recessed decorative panels. Its substantial size, elongated silhouette, and richly colored enamels give it a commanding decorative presence.
Period
Japan, Meiji period, circa 1900.
Dimensions
26 inches high × 10 inches wide.
Condition
Beautiful overall presentation, with hairline stress lines visible in the enamel around the lower body and foot. These are understood to have developed over the life of the vase, with accumulated dirt within the fine lines making them more pronounced through the translucent enamel. This discoloration is difficult to remove and forms part of the vase’s aged character. While visible on close inspection, these signs of age do not diminish its striking decorative presence. The remainder of the enamel is reported to be in excellent condition. The bronze base displays surface wear and patina consistent with age.
