A rare and exquisitely decorated Meiji Period circa 1890 Japanese cloisonne enamel jewelry chest attributed to Inaba, fashioned as a miniature cabinet with six drawers arranged in two columns. Measuring 5 inches tall, 4 inches wide, and 3 inches deep, this intimate work combines the architectural elegance of a small furnishing with richly detailed enamel decoration. Warm gilt metal mounts frame the panels, complemented by individual drawer pulls, small supporting feet, and a hinged carrying handle.
The drawer fronts present a delicate garden composition against a deep cobalt blue ground. Butterflies hover among chrysanthemums, blue blossoms, curling foliage, and slender grasses, their patterned wings carefully articulated in fine wire. Each drawer holds a distinct arrangement, yet the flowers and foliage create a harmonious visual rhythm across the façade. Soft pink, turquoise, lavender, green, and golden yellow provide luminous accents against the saturated blue.
The back, top, and side panels reveal an equally elaborate decorative scheme. Japanese treasure motifs, known as takaramono, appear alongside musical instruments, colorful phoenixes, flowing patterned ribbons, and scattered blossoms. These intricate arrangements unfold over a warm reddish brown ground filled with closely worked scrolling wire patterns, giving the surfaces extraordinary richness and texture.
The contrast between the open blue grounds of the drawer fronts and the densely ornamented surrounding panels is particularly striking. Narrow decorative borders and gilt metal divisions bring clarity to the abundant detail, while the curved carrying handle completes the chest’s balanced silhouette.
Beautifully conceived for appreciation from every angle, this miniature jewelry chest offers the pleasure of both a functional personal object and an elaborate cabinet work in enamel. Its six drawer construction, varied imagery, and intricate wire decoration make it a distinctive addition to a collection of Japanese decorative arts.
