Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Lily of the Valley Vase, Showa, Attributed to Ando
Description
An elegant large Japanese cloisonne enamel vase attributed to Ando, dating to the Showa period (1926 to 1989). Measuring 11 inches tall and 7 inches across the top, this silver mounted vase features delicate sprays of lily of the valley against a rich midnight blue ground.
The graceful form rises from a rounded base and gradually opens toward a broad, flared mouth. Silver mounts frame the upper rim and foot, lending a refined finish to the flowing silhouette. A Japanese silver mark appears on the underside.
Creamy white, bell shaped blossoms are arranged along slender stems, their luminous tones contrasting beautifully with the depth of the blue enamel. Broad leaves sweep upward through the composition in graduated shades of blue and soft blue green. Fine wire outlines define the flowers and leaf veins, while subtle variations in color give the foliage dimension and a gentle, painterly softness.
The asymmetrical arrangement balances concentrated floral detail with generous passages of uninterrupted blue. This thoughtful use of space emphasizes the arching stems and sculptural leaves, allowing the decoration to complement the vase’s proportions. The restrained palette gives the piece a quiet elegance, with the pale blossoms providing a striking focal point.
The attribution to Ando is based on comparison with numerous signed examples identical in form and decoration. The Japanese silver mark identifies the mounting material and is separate from a maker’s signature.
Distinguished by its substantial size, rich enamel ground, and silver mounts, this vase presents a refined expression of Japanese floral design from the Showa period.
