A striking Japanese cloisonne enamel vase attributed to Sato, dating to the Showa period (1926 to 1989). Measuring 10 inches tall and 6 inches wide, the vase features a rich turquoise green ground decorated with an imaginative arrangement of stylized birds and abstract figures.
The generously rounded body rises through gently sloping shoulders to an elongated neck and flared mouth. This graceful silhouette balances the animated decoration below with an uninterrupted expanse of green enamel above. Slender metal rims frame the mouth and foot, providing an understated finish.
The composition unfolds around the body through angular wings, circular eyes, sweeping curves, and elongated forms. Fine metal wires delineate the individual motifs, while delicately shaded enamels introduce depth within their geometric outlines. Cobalt blue, violet, pale green, soft gray, ochre, and burnt orange create a varied yet harmonious palette, punctuated by accents of white, yellow, and black.
Birds in flight appear above larger fanciful figures, lending movement and rhythm to the design. The contrast between these precisely outlined forms and the luminous green ground gives the vase a distinctive graphic presence, combining the intricate character of cloisonne with a bold modernist aesthetic.
Elegant in proportion and expressive in decoration, this vase makes a distinctive addition to a collection of Japanese enamels or modern decorative arts.
