An impressive Japanese cloisonne enamel vase, signed Temura, dating to the mid 20th century, within the Showa period (1926–1989). Measuring 11 inches tall and 8 inches wide, this substantial vase depicts Mount Fuji rising above a mist enveloped pine forest. Its broad shoulders and gracefully tapering body provide an expansive surface for a landscape that continues around the vessel.
The decoration combines wired and wireless enamel techniques to achieve a refined, painterly effect. Mount Fuji is rendered in wireless enamel, its snow covered summit contrasting with shaded blue and gray slopes. Soft transitions between the mountain, mist, and pale blue sky lend the scene an atmospheric quality, conveying depth through delicate variations in color.
Across the foreground, pine trees introduce rich green foliage and warm brown trunks. Fine wire defines selected trees with precision, while others are executed without wire, allowing their silhouettes to soften and recede into the distance. The contrast between clearly articulated branches and gently diffused forms gives the landscape its distinctive character.
The luminous pale blue ground brings cohesion to the composition, balancing detailed passages with areas of quiet space. Understated metal rims frame the mouth and foot, complementing the vase’s sculptural proportions.
With its substantial presence, restrained palette, and nuanced enamel decoration, this signed vase offers an elegant expression of Japanese landscape artistry and mid century decorative design.
