A rare 19th century Dutch armoire in stripped oak, celebrated for the hand carved chinoiserie scenes adorning each of its four door panels. The upper panels present exotic figures within delicate garden pavilions framed by trailing foliage and ribbon tied garlands, while the lower panels depict sailing ships with travelers bound for distant shores. Rendered in finely detailed low relief, the carvings tell a romantic story of Dutch sea voyages and the allure of faraway lands. The stripped finish brings the natural grain of the oak to the surface, giving the carving a soft, luminous depth.
Crafted with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the armoire rests on a base fitted with two drawers dressed in pierced brass pulls, raised on generous bun feet. A boldly molded cornice with canted corners crowns the case, and paneled sides complete the architectural composition. Opening the doors reveals an interior retaining its original pale blue gray painted finish, a charming surprise with a beautifully aged patina.
The Dutch fascination with the Orient was born of the great seafaring trade with Asia, when porcelain, silk, and lacquer arriving in Dutch ports inspired artisans across the Netherlands. Chinoiserie became a cherished decorative language in Dutch homes, and carved examples on oak furniture of such quality are seldom found today.
Wonderful in a bedroom, dressing room, or entry, the armoire brings a story rich presence to a collected interior. Its light, natural tone sits beautifully alongside blue and white porcelain, linen upholstery, and coastal or European inspired rooms, and it can be easily fitted for linens, clothing, or media.
