Oil on panel, 60 x 84 cm (painting only)
Within a 19th-century frame.

An artist to be counted among Poelenburgh's followers, he devoted himself exclusively to the depiction of imaginary caves with arches that offer glimpses of a distant landscape, never failing to depict ancient sculptural elements, a sign of his contact with the picturesque ruinism that prevailed in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. Cuylenborch stayed in Rome and Florence between 1617 and 1625. Further replicas of the work are at the National Museum in Stockholm (Inv. 1599, panel, 60x84 cm) and already at the auction houses Bolaffi (Florence, 27 October 2022, Panel, 53x66.5 cm), Fischer (Lucerne, 15 June 2016, Panel, 76x110 cm), Christie's (London, 15 July 2003, Panel, 60x84 cm) and Dorotheum (Vienna, 5 June 2002, Panel, 69x57 cm).
