An unusual late Victorian black glazed earthenware vase by Wardle & Co., England, dating to the late 19th century. Distinguished by its striking geometric silhouette, the vase exemplifies the progressive approach to ceramic design associated with the Aesthetic Movement. The sculptural form comprises a tall, gently tapering cylindrical neck rising from a pronounced spherical body, supported by a smaller hemispherical section and a short, flared pedestal foot. The carefully balanced arrangement of contrasting volumes creates a remarkably modern appearance, anticipating the geometric abstraction of 20th-century Modernist ceramics. Finished in a deep black glaze with subtle lustrous qualities, the vase relies entirely upon its proportions and silhouette rather than applied ornamentation. Its design recalls the experimental ceramic forms of Christopher Dresser, whose work challenged conventional Victorian decorative principles through simplified geometry and architectural composition. Wardle & Co. was an established Staffordshire pottery manufacturer, producing decorative earthenware and art pottery during the late Victorian period. The factory's output reflected the broader experimentation in British ceramic design associated with the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements. Impressed underneath with the Wardle England factory mark and shape number 365. Condition: Very good antique condition, with no chips, cracks or significant damage. Fine surface scratches to the black glaze, consistent with age and use. Dimensions: Height 21 cm (8.27 in); diameter 11 cm (4.33 in). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
