Antique french jacquard woven silk – christ on the cross – verzier bonnart & cie, lyon, circa 1840–1850
an exceptional example of 19th-century french jacquard silk weaving, depicting christ on the cross in remarkable detail.
produced by the lyon silk manufacturer verzier bonnart & cie, successors to f. S. Olive, this antique textile illustrates the technical sophistication of french silk weaving during the first half of the 19th century.
the image is entirely woven in silk, not printed, painted or embroidered. Its finely detailed monochrome composition resembles an engraving, with delicate tonal gradations, expressive anatomical modelling and an elaborate landscape.
