Sculptural Victorian era mechanical yarn winder believed to be English dating to the late 19th century.
Featuring an architectural openwork frame and gracefully curved arms, decorative pierced Gothic-Revival inspired supports and an exposed hand-operated gear mechanism with turned wooden crank handle.
Originally designed for winding yarn into measured skeins, this piece illustrates the marriage of utility and craftsmanship. I now see it as a decorative industrial sculpture that would be a statement piece displayed on a console, library table or pedestal. I could also see it being made into a lamp.
