A low, oval seat of dark carved wood carries a field of incised triangles and crossed lines across its top, resting on thick, tapered legs cut from the same block. This vintage Nupe carved wood stool from Nigeria shows the faceted tool marks of hand carving and a warm, rubbed patina on the legs. Nupe stools, carved from a single piece of wood, are a long-standing tradition in Nigeria, made as seats and low tables for the home.
At 14 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 9.5 inches tall, it sits comfortably beside a sofa as a side table, at the foot of a bed or by a fireplace as a low seat. The patterned top also makes it a good stand for a plant, a lamp or a favorite object.
