Signed lower right, 'Arno Muller' (German, 1902-1968); titled, verso, 'Vorfrühling in Coburg' (Early Spring in Coburg) and dated 1937.
A view of historic Coburg's gabled rooftops, framed by the budding branches of early spring trees, from the elevated, wooded terraces of the city's Hofgarten. Rising prominently above the urban landscape is the striking baroque spire of the Morizkirche (St. Maurice Church), while the sprawling medieval ramparts of the Veste Coburg (Coburg Fortress) anchor the distant hilltop skyline. Executed with a delicate palette and fluid brushwork, this piece reflects Müller’s mastery of light and atmosphere, standing as a serene, topographically significant record of the Upper Franconian landscape during the mid-20th century.
Born into an artistic family, Arno Muller first learned from his father, a theater painter, and subsequently studied under the Coburg painters Ernst Dorn, Heinrich Hollein and Wilhelm Otto Scheibe.
A lover of nature, Muller worked at the Natural History Museum for six years during his youth, assisting with illustration and lecture preparation among other duties. In 1920, the eighteen-year-old artist was introduced to Ferdinand I of Bulgaria who, outside of his political life, devoted much time to the study of natural history and was recognized as a botanist, entomologist and zoologist. The former Tsar chose Coburg as his home for life in exile and Muller created more than 150 paintings and illustrations for him.
In 1923, Arno Muller began his career as an educator. He taught art for over 35 years, first in Scherneck and then in Coburg. In 1952, he was appointed to the Institute for Teacher Training, where he remained until the institution closed its doors, and subsequently worked at the Rückert School where he became headmaster. Muller exhibited with success in Coburg and his works can be found in the permanent collection of the Predná Hora Mansion in the Muránska planina National Park (Slovakia).
