A fierce crowned guardian grips paired weapons in this antique Thai carved door panel, his wide-eyed face framed by flowers and flame-like scrollwork. Scaled legs and a ring of beasts fill the lower half, and the wood has darkened to a deep brown with red paint still showing in the recesses. Thai carvers have long filled temple doors with guardians and mythical beasts, each figure meant to keep harm outside.
At 60 inches tall and 21.5 inches wide, it works as a vertical focal point on a plain wall, beside a doorway or behind a console. The deep relief shifts with the light through the day, so the figure looks different from morning to evening.
