It would have been used for the storage of records, documents, money and other valuables.
The multiple drawers (10) and compartments (1) are fitted with handmade hardware, lock plates and corner fittings. 2 old keys are present - they do not work. Two side Sao-toshi:carrying handles.

Traditional Japanese cabinetry construction is evident, see rear and interior boards, natural shrinkage and separation, differential oxidation and age darkened unfinished interior surfaces. No modern ply/wood has been used. These characteristics, together with the form and hardware, support the below time/period of construction.
Visible characteristics expected from approximately 125 years of use.
Its original patina should be preserved rather than sanded, stained, oiled or refinished.

A useful as well as decorative piece for your home. Due to it's size it may also be placed upon a console or pedestal - see photograph.
Late Meiji Period / Early Taisho Period.
