Piece uses several Classical design elements introduced by Thomas Hope after his return from his Grand Tour including the Sphinx finial on the top of the cover and the lion masks handles with drop rings and the whole body raised on a winged Griffin. Piece is "tinned" on the inside and a feature I like it still has the tube in the center that would have either held hot coals or as I've seen in the past a hot iron slug, all to help keep the water hot. Often times these urns are silver plated. The only sign of plating is on the disc that supports the spigot where it enters the urn. I believe the urn retains its original patinated finish. If you look at the last photo you can see there is a faint crack about 1/4" long on the cover. One of the paws of the Griffin is slightly raised. I dont know if it was made this way or not. There is a little wear to the finish on the back side of the urn as can be seen in the photos. Piece is roughly 17 1/2" tall and about 14" wide and 14" deep including the spigot. The body of the urn is oval. A nice piece. See less
