The composition portrays the changing season between winter and spring, with lingering patches of snow giving way to sunlit grassy slopes scattered with delicate alpine vegetation. A winding mountain path draws the eye through the foreground towards a dramatic rocky outcrop and dense stands of dark evergreen trees, while billowing clouds animate the bright mountain sky above. Geel demonstrates a sensitive understanding of the Jura landscape, particularly in his treatment of changing light, elevation and seasonal colour. The contrast between cool snowfields, rich green vegetation and warmer earth tones creates an appealing sense of depth and freshness, conveying the clarity of the high-altitude environment. Signed by the artist to the lower left and presented in a gilt frame, the painting is an attractive example of Swiss mountain landscape painting with particularly appealing provenance.
