This exquisite vintage round box is a stunning example of carved cinnabar-style lacquerware. The thick, glossy red lacquer has been deeply carved in high relief to reveal intricate details. The domed lid is centered with a lush, blooming rose surrounded by smaller blossoms, leaves, and scrolling ribbons, all set against a finely textured, geometric diaper-pattern ground. The sides of both the lid and the base are similarly decorated with a continuous band of carved floral sprays, including chrysanthemums and roses. The box separates into two halves, revealing a smooth, pale greenish-yellow interior with a crackle finish. The interior base bears a carved four-character inscription.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 21.5 cm (approx. 8.46 inches)
Height: 12 cm (approx. 4.72 inches)
Maker's Mark:
The inside bottom of the box features a carved four-character inscription in a stylized script, which reads "慎德堂製" (Shen De Tang Zhi). This translates to "Made by the Hall of Prudent Virtue," a reference to a hall within the Qing Dynasty imperial palace. Note: As is common with vintage decorative pieces, this mark is likely apocryphal and serves as a tribute to classic imperial wares.

The carved red lacquer exterior is largely intact with a beautiful gloss. There is minor surface wear consistent with age and handling, including some light scuffs and very small chips to the raised carved edges, which is typical for this material. The interior shows a natural crackle finish and some discoloration from age. Please review all photos for details on the carving, interior, and overall condition. less
