The division into marble top, body, and turned frame is clearly ordered and appears cohesive due to its calm proportions. Historical context: in the late 19th century, the marble-topped bedside table was a standard feature in middle-class french bedrooms and was often made in pairs to match the bed. The stone top was resistant to moisture and suitable for candlesticks, water carafes, and toiletries. The closed compartment held chamber pots and pans, as many households still lacked a toilet near the bedroom. Mass production in workshops and small manufactories made such furniture accessible to a broad middle class. Features: the corners of the body are designed as pilasters with carved foliage, and the upper section features rosette carvings. An open shelf is located beneath the body between the four turned legs. Design: the design language combines elements of the louis xvi style with the typical blend of stylistic references of historicism. Fluted pilasters, profiled cornices, and the multi-tiered paneling of the door structure the front in strict axial symmetry. The rococo-style brass handles add an ornamental accent. The turned frame with ring profiles visually reduces the weight and gives the piece an upright, light appearance. Function: formerly: bedside table with a compartment for nightclothes and a shelf for a candlestick and toiletries. Today: bedside table, side table in the living room or bedroom, or small storage unit in the hallway or bathroom. Dimensions: 83 × 43 × 43 cm (h × w × d). Material and condition: wooden body, reddish-brown lacquered, inlaid white marble top with gray veining, rococo-style brass handles. Sturdy, well-preserved for its age with signs of wear and patina. The paint has minor chips and scratches on the edges and drawer fronts. The marble top has discoloration and stains, especially along the edges. See less
