Executed in oil on canvas, the work demonstrates Brereton's particular fascination with the great sailing vessels of the 19th century. The ship is rendered with the meticulous attention to rigging, sails and maritime detail for which the artist is known, while the surrounding sea and expansive sky create a strong sense of atmosphere and movement. Brereton's marine paintings draw upon the great tradition of British maritime art while retaining a distinctly contemporary approach. His knowledge of historic vessels allows him to combine technical precision with the drama and romance of the age of sail. At 40 inches wide and approximately 49 inches framed, this is a substantial statement piece with considerable decorative presence. The large format allows Brereton to fully explore the relationship between vessel, sea and sky, making it particularly suited to a collection of British marine art or an impressive traditional interior. The painting is signed lower right and is additionally titled, signed and dated by the artist on the reverse, providing further documentation of the work. About James Brereton James Brereton (born 1954) is a British marine painter known particularly for his detailed depictions of historic sailing ships. Born in Derby, Brereton studied at the Joseph Wright School of Art. Although initially employed outside the art world, he continued painting in his spare time and by 1979 had developed sufficient demand for his work to become a professional artist. His early subjects encompassed landscapes, coastal views, still lifes, townscapes and figurative compositions. After living near the south coast of England, however, marine painting increasingly became the central focus of his career. Brereton is particularly associated with 19th-century deep-water sailing ships, which he portrays with careful attention to their construction, rigging and sails. His work draws inspiration from the tradition of celebrated marine painters including Thomas Somerscales, Montague Dawson and Charles Dixon. Over a long career, Brereton has produced an extensive body of work devoted to the ships, coastlines and maritime atmosphere of Britain's seafaring past.
