The composition is dominated by a sailing boat with striking rust-red sails, shown cutting through rolling grey-green waves. A second vessel appears to the left, while another is visible on the distant horizon. Above, an expansive blue-grey sky filled with softly rendered clouds creates a convincing sense of changing coastal weather. Steppe handles the water with particularly expressive brushwork, using broken passages of white, grey, blue and green to capture the movement of the waves and reflected light. The warmer tones of the sails provide a strong contrast against the cool maritime palette. The painting is housed in a substantial and highly decorative gilt frame, giving the work an overall width of approximately 155 cm and making it particularly suited to a large interior. Signed "Romain Steppe" lower left. About Romain Steppe Romain Steppe (1859–1927) was a Belgian landscape and marine painter particularly associated with seascapes, waterscapes and atmospheric landscapes. He studied under several artists, including Isidore Meyers, an important figure associated with the Belgian landscape tradition sometimes referred to as the Grey School. Steppe became particularly interested in capturing changing atmospheric and light conditions over water. He was also associated with the Antwerp artistic circle Als Ik Kan, founded during the 1880s. His travels took him through Belgium and elsewhere in Europe, while the Scheldt and maritime subjects remained important elements of his work. This substantial seascape demonstrates his characteristic interest in light, weather and the movement of water, combining carefully observed sailing vessels with freer, atmospheric handling of sea and sky.
