Executed in oil on canvas, the painting demonstrates Aurrens' highly individual approach to Pointillism and Luminism, using broken touches of colour and carefully observed tonal contrasts to convey the effects of Mediterranean light. Rather than following a rigid Pointillist technique, Aurrens developed a freer interpretation in which individual strokes and areas of colour combine to create an atmospheric and vibrant surface. Landscape remained central to Aurrens' work, particularly after his return to Marseille following a period spent in Paris. His mature paintings are characterised by their luminosity, expressive colour and distinctly southern French atmosphere. The painting is signed at the lower left and presented in a substantial decorative frame. At approximately 38 inches framed, it has excellent wall presence while retaining the intimate character associated with Aurrens' landscapes. An attractive example of early 20th-century French Post-Impressionist painting, particularly suited to collections of Pointillism, French landscape painting and Mediterranean art. About Henri Aurrens Henri Aurrens (1873–1934) was a French painter and illustrator born in Marseille. Aurrens initially concentrated on landscapes in and around his native city before moving to Paris, where he spent several years and also produced political caricatures for contemporary publications. He participated in the Parisian exhibition circuit and exhibited Dovecote at the Salon d'Automne in 1919. Following his return to Marseille, landscape became an increasingly important element of his work. He developed a distinctive approach influenced by Pointillism and Luminism, adapting these techniques with a freer and more personal application of colour and brushwork. The brilliant light and landscape of southern France provided particularly suitable subjects for his technique, resulting in paintings characterised by luminous colour and atmospheric effects. Works by Aurrens are held by the Musée Cantini in Marseille, an institution particularly associated with modern art in southern France.
