An authentic, mid-20th-century hand-carved and painted wooden ceremonial monkey (mico) mask from the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Traditionally worn in cultural ceremonial performances such as the Danza del Venado (Deer Dance) or Danza de los Monos (Monkey Dance), this expressive ethnographic piece features a striking black hand-patinated base, highly stylized white accents framing the eyes, and a charmingly distinct spotted snout.
True to traditional construction, the mask features deep-set vision slits carved directly above the decorative painted eyes to allow the dancer visibility. Complete with its original fiber hanging cord, this mask exhibits excellent folk art character, visible hand-tool marks, and a beautifully aged surface texture. A compelling statement piece for collectors of Mesoamerican artifactual art, tribal decor, or curated global eclecticism.
