Elevate your tabletop with a true piece of American hospitality history. Crafted by celebrated silversmith Reed & Barton, this heavy-gauge silver-soldered gravy boat (sauce boat) was custom-manufactured for the legendary Hotels Statler chain. Featuring an elegant pedestal base, smooth sweeping pouring spout, structured geometric handle, and classic gadrooned border detailing, this piece embodies the peak of early 20th-century hotelware design.
The maker's mark stamped on the underside reads:
REED & BARTON / SILVER SOLDERED / 1300 C2 / 8 OZ / HOTELS STATLER.
Unlike lightweight domestic silverplate, Hotel Silver was specially engineered for heavy daily service in world-class grand hotels, ocean liners, luxury trains, and fine dining establishments. Constructed with extra-thick layers of pure silver electroplated over durable base metal alloys and joined with high-temperature hard silver solder, these pieces were built to withstand intense commercial usage and frequent polishing. Today, authentic hotel silver is fiercely sought after by interior designers and antique collectors for its substantial hand-weight, architectural stability, and time-tested durability that easily outlives modern tableware.
Founded by Ellsworth Milton Statler, Hotels Statler revolutionized the modern hospitality industry. Opening his flagship hotel in Buffalo, New York, in 1908, Statler pioneered innovations that became global standards—including private bath facilities in every guestroom, room light switches next to doors, built-in radios, and complimentary morning newspapers. Known as "the hotel keeper of the century," Statler built iconic luxury properties across major cities (including New York City, Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, and St. Louis). Dining at a Statler restaurant was an opulent experience, punctuated by fine linens, personalized china, and custom Reed & Barton silver service pieces like this sauce boat.
This piece has been intentionally curated and selectively hand-polished: the broad, smooth exterior and interior surfaces have been polished to a brilliant shine, while authentic historic dark tarnish has been purposely left within the crest medallion, rim crevices, handle joints, and bottom stamps. This intentional high-contrast finishing highlights the intricate craftsmanship, accents the embossed details, and preserves the authentic character and vintage patina that discerning collectors look for.
Perfect as an elevated sauce server for holiday dining, a chic matchbook holder, a small barware accent, or an addition to a curated hotel silver display.

Expected age-related wear including light surface scratches, minor rubbing, and signs of prior use consistent with vintage hotel silver.
