Patches of old snow lie across a winter marsh between clumps of violet brush and tufts of golden grass, with a line of bare trees and a snowy, wooded bluff under a pale lavender sky.

Mortensen carved and printed it himself from a single woodblock in the reduction method, cutting away and printing one color at a time from the same block, so the block is used up as the edition is printed and no more impressions can be made. Titled "Mid-Western Winter" in pencil at lower left, numbered 52/130 at lower center, and signed and dated in pencil at lower right. The edition was 130.

Gordon Mortensen was born in 1938 near Arnegard, North Dakota, and earned his BFA with honors from the Minneapolis School of Art in 1964. Trained as a portrait painter, he turned almost entirely to the reduction woodcut and became one of its best-known American practitioners, working in the Upper Midwest and later in California. His prints are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center.

Presented in its original silver metal frame with a white mat and a gray inner mat.
