An exceptional piece of signed 1980s American studio art pottery by ceramicist Joel De La Vega. This hand-thrown earthenware pitcher features a robust, organically curved body with an elegant hand-pulled architectural loop handle and a wide pouring spout.
The defining attribute of this artisanal ewer is its dramatic, high-contrast reactive drip glaze. To achieve this flowing visual effect, the artist applied a multi-step glazing technique. The body was first coated in a glossy, ink-black foundation glaze. A separate, thicker white and celadon-green reactive overglaze was then applied around the shoulder and rim. During the intense heat of the kiln firing, this top layer reached a highly fluid state. Gravitational pull naturally drew the molten white glaze downward, causing it to stream in organic, cascading vectors over the black background. Where the distinct chemical glazes met, they created a beautifully mottled, textured "froth" effect that makes this vessel completely one-of-a-kind.
The underside is deeply incised with the artist's full signature, "Joel De La Vega," and dated "4-1988." At 3 pounds, this substantial vintage vessel serves as a magnificent standalone sculptural statement or functional accent for a Postmodern, MCM, or eclectic interior collection.
Joel De La Vega operates as an independent, small-batch studio ceramicist and regional woodcarving artisan. A rare, beautifully documented piece of late-1980s American regional studio art pottery, individually hand-signed and dated by independent artisan Joel De La Vega."
