This exquisite example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving represents the pinnacle of the Peking tradition. Its generous proportions and refined palette make it a standout among antique rugs, offering both historical depth and timeless decorative appeal.

The expansive, luminous field is rendered in a soft, golden ivory, providing a perfect counterpoint to the dramatic indigo border. The central medallion, a circular burst of stylized flowers and birds, utilizes rich tones of cerulean and navy, anchoring the composition. The careful deployment of blue color rugs in this era often served to highlight the neutral ground, a technique mastered by Peking weavers adapting to Western demand.

Characteristic of the period, the design balances traditional Chinese symbolism—including phoenixes and blossoming branches—with a modern, open aesthetic. The corners feature detailed bird and cloud motifs that gently transition into the main field. The border is particularly striking, composed of alternating cartouches depicting classical landscapes and subtle floral sprays against the deep navy ground.

Woven with exceptional skill and retaining its original luster, this piece is ideally suited for a sophisticated interior seeking historical depth and elegance. Its substantial dimensions classify it perfectly as one of the highly desirable room size rugs, capable of defining a formal dining area or grand living space with its quiet authority. See less
