Painted in oil on canvas, the composition demonstrates Hesketh's distinctive approach to British Impressionism, favouring confident, painterly handling and a restrained, tonal palette rather than the heightened colours associated with French Impressionism. The work captures the character and atmosphere of Britain's northeastern coast and the fishing communities that provided inspiration for much of his oeuvre. Born in the northeast of England, Richard Hesketh spent much of his life in Newcastle upon Tyne. Like many accomplished regional painters of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, he drew extensively upon the landscapes, coastal scenery and everyday life of his surroundings. Hesketh exhibited regularly in the northeast of England. This particular painting has additional interest through its exhibition provenance, having been exhibited at the Newcastle-on-Tyne Art Exhibition, as recorded by the surviving label on the reverse. The painting retains its original antique frame, adding considerably to its period character and presentation. Hesketh is recorded in Dictionary of British Artists 1900–1950 by Grant M. Waters.
