The painting depicts a congregation leaving Santa Maria Maggiore in Tuscania, Italy, with the figures shown against the richly detailed Romanesque architecture of the church. The composition captures the atmosphere of an Italian town with groups of elegantly dressed figures gathering outside the imposing arched entrances. This particular composition is understood to have been painted from a different viewpoint to a better-known example by David Roberts, offering a distinctive perspective of the historic church and surrounding figures. The work carries additional provenance interest, with stencilled marks to the reverse indicating that it has previously been offered at Christie's on two occasions. The painting has been relined and restored during the 20th century. It is presented in a later decorative frame, which, while functional, is somewhat less distinguished than the quality and character of the painting itself.
