Executed in oil on canvas, the painting demonstrates Aurrens' characteristic use of broken colour and expressive brushwork to capture the effects of light and atmosphere. Rather than adhering rigidly to the formal techniques of Neo-Impressionism, Aurrens developed a freer interpretation of Pointillism and Luminism, creating richly textured compositions filled with movement and colour. Marine and Mediterranean subjects were particularly well suited to his technique, allowing reflections, water and changing light to be constructed through individual touches of contrasting colour. Of particular interest, Aurrens signed the reverse and inscribed his Paris address, providing an appealing direct connection with the artist and his period working in the French capital. The painting is additionally signed at the lower left. Presented in an attractive carved antique frame, the work has considerable decorative presence at 86 cm high overall. About Henri Aurrens Henri Aurrens (1873–1934) was a French painter and illustrator born in Marseille. He initially painted landscapes in and around his native city before moving to Paris, where he worked for several years and produced political caricatures for contemporary publications. He participated in the Parisian art world and exhibited Dovecote at the Salon d'Automne in 1919. After returning to Marseille, Aurrens increasingly concentrated on the luminous landscapes and coastal scenery of southern France. His mature paintings reveal the influence of Pointillism and Luminism, although he interpreted these movements with a noticeably freer and more individual approach. His paintings are particularly admired for their treatment of Mediterranean light, using broken strokes of colour to convey reflections and atmosphere. Works by Aurrens are represented in the Musée Cantini in Marseille, alongside the broader tradition of French modern painting with which his work is associated.
