Painted in oil on canvas, the sitter is presented half-length against a deep, almost black background, creating a striking contrast with the warm golden-ochre tones of her dress. Her finely rendered features, softly braided and swept-back hair, delicate drop earring and elaborate ruffled bodice capture the refinement and understated elegance of late victorian portraiture. The portrait has a particularly intimate quality, suggesting a work painted within the artist’s family circle rather than as a formal commissioned portrait. Gore is principally recognised for his genre paintings, rural subjects and depictions of children, but he also painted members of his family. The treatment of the sitter, restrained palette and sensitive modelling are consistent with the traditional attribution to his hand. The sitter has been associated with members of the gore family through comparison with portraits reproduced in margaret wheeler’s 1992 monograph, william henry gore: a victorian/edwardian painter 1857–1942. The work has traditionally been identified as alice gore, the artist’s sister, although related documentation has also identified a comparable sitter as gore’s niece. The painting is presented in a handsome period gilt frame, whose broad moulded profile complements the rich golden tones of the sitter’s costume and gives the portrait an impressive decorative presence. Accompanying the painting is a 52-page catalogue relating to william henry gore and the 1988 exhibition at newbury museum, berkshire, providing valuable contextual material concerning the artist and his work. A refined and evocative victorian portrait combining strong decorative appeal with an interesting connection to the family and oeuvre of william henry gore.
