The composition is rendered with a subtle and restrained use of colour, combining delicate washes of watercolour with expressive ink work. Arrobus employs a loose, impressionistic approach, capturing the atmosphere and architectural character of the scene with an appealing economy of line and tone. Sydney Arrobus studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in London and initially worked as a commercial artist. During the Second World War he served in France, Egypt, Syria and Greece, producing drawings, portraits and propaganda material. After returning to Britain, he exhibited regularly, including with the Ben Uri Art Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. His works are represented in several public collections, including the Imperial War Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Burgh House in Hampstead. Dating from approximately the 1960s–1970s, the work is presented beneath glass within a distressed cream-painted wooden frame. Presented in good vintage condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use to the frame.
