The duchess is portrayed with beautifully defined powdered curls beneath an imposing wide-brimmed hat adorned with white and warm red-orange feather plumes. A soft white fur stole surrounds her shoulders, while a delicate rose provides an elegant finishing detail to the composition. Painted by hand on an oval porcelain plaque, the portrait displays confident and detailed brushwork with particularly attractive treatment of the facial features, hair, costume and feathers. The colours remain rich and vibrant, giving the portrait considerable presence despite its intimate scale. The plaque is presented within an elaborate rococo-style gilt frame, deeply modelled with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral ornament and shell motifs. A delicate beaded inner border surrounds the oval portrait, while the naturally aged gilding displays warm tonal variation and patination that complement the painting beautifully. The reverse retains an important collector's identification label reading: “devonshire — lady georgiana spencer, married 5th duke of devonshire, 1774. By t. Gainsborough.” the historic label documents the traditional identification of the sitter and the gainsborough source for the composition. The reverse also retains its aged black-painted backing board and traditional string hanger. Georgiana spencer (1757–1806), duchess of devonshire, was one of the most celebrated figures of georgian society. An aristocrat, socialite, political campaigner and influential fashion figure, she became an enduring cultural icon and was portrayed by several leading artists of her generation. Portraits of celebrated historical figures after important old master and georgian paintings became particularly fashionable during the victorian period, with finely painted porcelain plaques prized as sophisticated decorative objects. Presented in good antique condition. The porcelain portrait remains vivid and well preserved, while the gilt frame displays attractive age-related wear and patination consistent with its period. A highly decorative example of victorian portraiture, combining finely painted porcelain, an elaborate rococo gilt frame and documented identification of one of georgian britain's most celebrated women.
