Painted in oil on board, the composition is dominated by a magnificent mature tree beneath which cattle graze beside a small watercourse. Beyond, open green fields lead towards farm buildings and distant trees, creating an evocative record of the rural landscape around Nottingham before much of the area's later development. Cox handles the scene with confident, expressive brushwork, particularly evident in the richly textured foliage and foreground vegetation. Fresh greens, warm earth tones and touches of yellow and blue combine with the softly painted sky to create a convincing sense of summer light and atmosphere. Ernest Cox was a Nottingham-based landscape painter whose relatively short career ended with his death in 1938. He exhibited extensively at Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, making this locally focused landscape particularly relevant to his artistic history. The painting is clearly signed “E. Cox” lower right and is presented in a substantial period gilt frame with moulded decorative ornament, complementing its early 20th-century character. An appealing example of Modern British regional landscape painting, combining local Nottinghamshire interest, attractive provenance potential and strong decorative qualities.
