Executed in pastel, the work demonstrates Chabanian's mastery of light, colour and atmosphere. Softly modulated tones and expressive handling create the sense of changing conditions over the water, qualities that became central to his reputation as a marine painter. Chabanian's artistic development was closely connected with marine painting from an early stage. During the 1890s he travelled to Theodosia, where he met the celebrated marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky and sought his artistic advice. He subsequently moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian, establishing himself within the French artistic community. Pastel formed an important part of Chabanian's practice alongside painting and printmaking. The medium was particularly suited to his atmospheric approach, allowing subtle transitions of colour and light to be rendered with immediacy. The work is signed at the lower right and remains in excellent age-appropriate condition. At 22 inches wide and 28 inches framed, it is an attractive medium-sized example of Chabanian's marine work. About Arsène Chabanian Arsène Chabanian (1864–1949) was an Armenian-born painter and printmaker best known for his marine paintings, landscapes and atmospheric coastal views. Born in Karin, historically known as Erzurum, Chabanian studied at the Murad-Raphaelian College in Venice before spending time in Batumi. In 1890 he travelled to Theodosia, where he met Ivan Aivazovsky, whose celebrated marine paintings provided an important early influence. Chabanian later moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian, where his teachers included prominent artists such as Gustave Moreau, Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin-Constant. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1894 and subsequently established a considerable reputation in France. His marine works were exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition, and he became closely associated with marine painting as well as colour printmaking. In 1926, the prestigious Galerie Georges Petit in Paris mounted a solo exhibition of his work. That same year, Chabanian was appointed a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour.
