The artist captures a wonderfully tranquil countryside scene, with the horses positioned at the boundary between the brightly illuminated meadow and the deep shade of the surrounding woodland. Confident, expressive brushwork and a harmonious palette of greens, ochres and earthy browns create a convincing sense of summer light and atmosphere. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the expansive blue sky and sunlit pasture to the left and the dense canopy of trees dominating the right of the composition. The three ponies provide a natural focal point and give the landscape its distinctive equestrian character. Executed in oil on board, the work is signed “Maclark” to the lower right and dates to approximately the 1920s. It remains presented within its attractive period-style gilt and dark-finished frame, which complements the warm tones of the painting beautifully. An appealing original work for collectors of British landscape painting, equestrian art and early 20th-century oils, as well as a highly decorative piece for a traditional, country house or eclectic interior.
