The composition portrays two young girls beneath the shade of a magnificent mature tree, one resting while the other plays nearby. Their quiet presence lends an appealing narrative quality to the expansive landscape, evoking the leisurely rural subjects favoured by british painters during the victorian and edwardian periods. The artist has captured the derbyshire countryside with lively, expressive brushwork and a particularly attractive palette of fresh greens, soft blues and warm earth tones. Wildflowers enliven the foreground, while a winding stretch of water leads the eye towards distant wooded hills beneath an atmospheric sky. Signed to the lower right, apparently “b. Smith” or similar, the artist's identity has not been conclusively established. The painting is presented in an attractive gilt frame, which complements the rich natural colouring of the landscape and gives the work considerable decorative presence. A delightful example of traditional british landscape painting, combining derbyshire local interest, pastoral scenery and figurative subject matter in an evocative country setting. Artist signed b.
