The fireplace displays the refined simplicity characteristic of Edwardian design, favouring elegant proportions and restrained decoration over the heavier ornamentation associated with the preceding Victorian period. Its impressive height gives the piece considerable architectural presence, while the beautifully crisp casting demonstrates the quality of early 20th-century British ironwork. Constructed from substantial solid cast iron, the surround retains its original and attractively shaped mantel top, an important feature that preserves the integrity and authentic character of the original design. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration. Numerous historic layers of paint were carefully stripped away before the cast iron received a protective treatment and was finished using traditional grate polish. The resulting rich gunmetal surface beautifully highlights the depth and definition of the original casting. The reverse has also been thoroughly cleaned, prepared and spray painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. Designed to fit neatly around an existing fireplace opening, the surround retains its original mounting lugs to the outer body for straightforward and secure installation. Presented in excellent restored condition, this is a particularly attractive example of Edwardian architectural ironwork, combining impressive proportions, understated period decoration, original components and desirable Castle Combe provenance.
