The composition is particularly detailed, with the shepherd standing prominently in the foreground surrounded by grazing sheep, his dog seated faithfully beside him. Behind the figures rises an impressive mountainous landscape populated with fir trees, a rustic chalet and distant architectural details, creating a richly layered scene evocative of traditional life in the foothills of the Alps. The carving displays considerable depth and texture, with the rugged mountain faces, trees, animals, clothing and facial features individually modelled to create an almost sculptural three-dimensional effect.
