Executed in acrylic on board, the composition approaches the timeless subject of motherhood through an expressive vocabulary of bold colour, energetic line and layered painterly forms. Rather than presenting the figures literally, Huntermann reduces the mother and child to interconnected shapes and gestures, creating an image centred on intimacy, protection and emotional connection. The artist’s confident application of colour and overlapping passages gives the work considerable movement and depth, while the fragmented forms lend it a distinctly modern character. The result is both figurative and abstract, allowing the relationship between the two subjects to emerge gradually from the composition. Huntermann was active within the British art community and served as President of the United Society of Artists from 2005 to 2008. He was also associated with the Dorking Group of Artists and Suffolk Open Studios and produced portrait and figurative work alongside his more expressive compositions. The painting is signed lower right and retains an artist's label to the reverse, providing additional identification. Presented framed and ready for display, it is an engaging example of later 20th-century British modernist painting with a universally appealing subject.
