Executed in oil on canvas, the work depicts a coastal or beach scene and demonstrates Baird's ability to capture the changing effects of light and atmosphere within the landscape. His restrained palette and naturalistic handling give the composition a tranquil quality, while the open shoreline and water create a strong sense of space. Although American by birth, Baird developed his career within the European artistic tradition, particularly in France. His extensive travels through France and Switzerland provided subjects for numerous landscapes, alongside the rural and animal paintings for which he also became well known. The painting is signed at the lower right and presented in a decorative frame. An appealing example of late 19th-century transatlantic landscape painting, combining an American artist's perspective with the influence of the French artistic environment in which Baird worked. About William Baptiste Baird William Baptiste Baird (1847–1917) was an American painter born in Chicago, Illinois, who became known for his landscapes, rural subjects and animal paintings. Baird moved to Paris and studied under the French painter Adolphe Yvon. France subsequently became an important centre of his artistic career, and he travelled extensively throughout both France and Switzerland in search of subjects. from 1872 to 1899, Baird exhibited at the Paris Salon. He also exhibited in the United States, including at the National Academy of Design during the 1870s and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His oeuvre encompasses landscapes, coastal views and rural scenes as well as animal subjects. Chickens, rabbits and other animals frequently appear in his paintings, often incorporated into carefully observed countryside settings. Today, Baird's work is collected on both sides of the Atlantic and represents an interesting intersection between 19th-century American and French landscape painting.
